First of all, the aspect of the vineyard is important when choosing a land for cultivation. Additionally, the structure of the soil profile as well as the availability of water are essential.

Our vineyards in the Breisgau region are characterized by their small structured parcels. High extract and high quality wines ripen, due to the fertile loess, loam, marl and muschelkalk soils and the sunny and well-balanced climate.

Being aware of that, eminent monasteries settled down in the Breisgau region already in the early Middle Ages. They devoted themselves very skillfully to vines and winemaking. Especially the Cistercian monks coming from Beaune in the Burgundy region had a very high wine culture and have influenced the regional wine-growing until today.
